Cymdeithas targets Tesco in Ammanford
As part of Cymdeithas yr Iaith's campaign to remind the Assembly
Government of the need for strong legislation regarding the Welsh
language, members of Cymdeithas will be picketing outside Tesco store
in Ammanford on Saturday afternoon the 26th of April at 2pm.
Cymdeithas yr Iaith will be targeting 2 private sector companies every
2 months from now until the end of the year, focusing on Tesco and
Morrisons in the months of March and April.
Tesco is one of the largest companies trading in Wales at the moment,
their annual profits are beyond belief ? nearly £3 billion during the
last financial year - and are contunuing to rise with new branches
opening all over the country. Even so, their Welsh medium provision is
tokenistic, with the limited service available often being inferior
and incorrect.
Bethan Williams, Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith's Language Act group said:
"We'll be targeting those companies that take money from the people of
Wales but refuse to provide an equal service in Welsh as well as in
English. We're calling on the people of Wales to write a letter of
complaint to send to these companies regarding their inadequate and
flawed language policy."
She added:
"We're calling on these large companies to ensure that the following
are bilingual: all the permanent signage, seasonal marketing material
and temporary signs, tanoy announcements, and own brand packaging. We
also call on them to use local produce where possible and to establish
training schemes for staff to be able to work and provide a service
through the medium of Welsh."
Angharad Clwyd, Cymdeithas yr Iaith's Dyfed Organiser said:
"We'll be distributing leaflets outside Tesco in Ammanford on Saturday
afternoon asking customers to write to the company to make sure that
they're aware of the demand for bilingual services in Wales. We've had
discussions with Tesco and Morrisons and it's clear now that unless a
Welsh Language Act is put in place to compel the private sector to
give equal status to the Welsh Language, we can only expect the usual
tokenistic Welsh Language service to continue. We therefore call on
the National Assembly to ensure that any new language legislation
includes the private sector."
