Cymdeithas accuse Rhodri Glyn of political spin

Ble mae'r Gymraeg?Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg has accused Rhodri Glyn Thomas the Heritage Minister of political spin with today's announcement that 57 organisations are to treat Welsh on an equal footing with English.

A spokesperson on behalf of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg said:

"On first sight this list of 57 organisations looks impressive, but on closer examination we realize that this is the same list as the one released by Alun Pugh the former Culture Minister in the Welsh Assembly Government over a year ago. There were 59 organisations on the list then. This only proves that the Welsh Assembly Government's Welsh language policy has stagnated over the last twelve months."

"Rather than falling back on this kind of political spin we call on Rhodri Glyn Thomas to concentrate all his efforts on securing a New Welsh language Act which will have powers extending to the private sector. Such a Language act would make lists such as the one we had today irrelevant."

"In order to emphasise the need for a New Welsh Language Act members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg targeted the Superdrug store in Caernarfon, covering the building with stickers calling for a New language Act. Direct action of this nature will continue until a New Welsh Language Act with powers extending to the private sector is passed."
