Twoleading membersof Cymdeithas to appear at Caernarfon agistrates Court

Steffan Cravos former Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg, and Osian Jones the organisation's North Wales Field Workrt are to appear before Caernarfon Magistrates Court at 9 o'clock tomorrow, Wednesday August 14th. They have been charged with criminal damage following their arrest on June 9th for painting slogans calling for a New Welsh language Act on Superdrug and Boots stores in Llangefni, Bangor and Caernarfon.

Two school girls, also arrested with Osian Jones and Steffan Cravos were given an official warning by the police. The police also confiscated a car and mobile phones belonging to the defendants.

Osian Jones speaking on behalf of himself and Steffan Cravos said:

"Boots and Superdrug stores were targeted by us as part of a Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg campaign for a New Welsh Language Act. We believe that large private companies such as Boots and Superdrug should be answerable to such an Act, and recognize in full the rights of Welsh speakers. Following the court case Cymdeithas yr iaith Gymraeg will continue to campaign and lobby for a New Welsh Language Act. Our hope is that the Welsh Assembly Government will keep to its promise in the One Wales document and introduce a Welsh Language Measure in the Autumn."
