S4C law change - an investment worth fighting for
Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (The Welsh Language Society) has responded to the news that the UK government intends to change the law to cut S4C's budget.
The society will hold a rally "No to cuts, Yes to a new S4C" on Saturday 6th November at 11am, Cathays Park, Cardiff.
Menna Machreth, Chair, Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg said:
"Our Welsh language programmes and public service broadcasting hangs in the balance. Campaigners fought hard for a reason, namely to make sure that the channel's budget is safe in law. Now the money is controlled by people who don't understand how valuable our Welsh language programmes to us."
"They are also following a dangerous path which would undermine the channel's independence, by putting so much power over a television channel in the hands of one Minister. We call on people to oppose the cuts in general and to come to support our programmes and our Welsh language channel by coming to our rally on Saturday 6th November in Cardiff: 'No to cuts - Yes to a new S4C'."
"The future funding of Welsh language media now depends on the whim of a reckless government. This is a clear sign that we need to devolve media and broadcasting to Wales."
