Calls on Labour Councillors to consult with the people of Carmarthenshire (Press Release)

Cadwn Ein Hysgolion.JPG Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg has asked Labour Councillors at Carmarthenshire County Council not to give their support to the controversial new strategy, which could sound the death knell for over 30 Welsh medium village schools, until there has been 6 months of extensive consultation throughout the county on the principles of this strategy.

The leader of the Labour Group (Coun. Martin Morris) has told Cymdeithas that “this is a draft plan” and that there will be consultation before decisions are made. In answer to him, Cymdeithas yr iaith says that the planned consultation in the County will not be on the basic principles of the strategy but rather it will be limited to local details in accordance with statutory requirements.

The Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith in Carmarthenshire, Sioned Elin (who has children attending threatened Bancffosfelen school)

“The people of Carmarthenshire will not be able to express their opinion on the basic principle of whether we should develop our village schools or centralise our children in a few new central schools, they will only be able to express an opinion on the details of the proposals – such as the location of the new school. This is not consultation, Our call to the council at their meeting on December 8th is not to recommend the strategy on that day but to initiate a 6 month period of
extensive public consultation with meetings throughout the County on the Strategy’s basic principles and then to take a decision, base on these consultations next year.”
